10 May 2024

Due to the rain this week the bunkers under repair on the 18th are very slippery.

For that reason, the 18th hole will remain out of play tomorrow Saturday 11th May and Sunday 12th May.

The temporary hole will be in play on those days.

MAY 2024

The North West Region Golf Association's Friday Senior Pennant competition, for male players 55 years of age and above, comprises teams from 12 clubs in our geographical region. Each team consists of 10 players in designated handicap bands and the competition is played over 7 home-and-away rounds with the top 2 teams playing off in the final for the Ron Albany / Michael Church Cup.

Our Senior Pennant side was undefeated during the home-and-away rounds posting 5 wins and 2 draws.
The team went on to win the final on 19th April against Melbourne Airport GC at Club Mandalay 6 matches to 4.
The Pennant Team Manager, David Roberts said it was a fantastic win especially as this pennant competition has been going for 15 years and this was our first win. David went on to say that "normally I congratulate the winning players, however I want to congratulate the whole squad who played, caddied and supported our team this year".

After 3 years as Team Manager David is handing over the reins to his capable deputy, Andy Frame. We wish Andy all the best in our quest for a back- to- back wins in 2025 and sincerely thank David for his management of the team over the past 3 seasons.

The Golf Victoria Men's Pennant competition, for low single figure handicap players, comprises teams from 6 clubs in Division 6. Each team consists of 7 players and the competition is played over 7 home-and-away rounds on Sundays from February through to April .The top 2 teams play off in the final and progress to Division 5 the following year.

Our Pennant side finished in 4th place with 2 wins, 4 losses and a bye. Despite not making the final there were a number of positives to be taken from the season especially as 3 of the losses were by the narrow margin of 4 matches to 3. Junior members Angus Hawker, Jake Miller and Kadin Miller each played several matches and gained valuable experience going forward. The team was well captained by Nathan Kungl who led from the front remaining undefeated from his 7 matches. After 4 years as Team Manager, Neil Bruce is stepping down. We are indebted to Neil for his passion and commitment over the past 4 years and thank him sincerely for his energy, time and commitment to the Pennant program over his time as VGA Team Manager.

On behalf of the Pennant Managers, Stuart Hodge (NW Sunday Pennant), David Roberts (NW Senior Pennant) and Neil Bruce (VGA Pennant) and all the players we take this opportunity to thank the following for their support for the Pennant Program;

Tony Vercher - Hodges Real Estate Werribee
Alan Pengelly - A & G Pengelly
Vicki Horan, WPGC Administration Manager
WPGC President Mark Callen , Captain Peter Murray and the Board of Directors

Installation of the new fairway irrigation works starting on the 22nd April

The installation of the new fairway irrigation system will commence on Monday 29th April.

We postponed the commencement of the irrigation project because we needed to complete the bunker works on the 18th fairway first.

The aim is to have the irrigation on one fairway upgraded each week. There may be some delays during such a lengthy period, so we expect all works to take approximately 22 weeks.

We will begin working on the 18th hole, taking the opportunity to implement the Master Plan improvements at the same time. This will ensure compatibility of any irrigation infrastructure with the approved Master Plan. A newsletter update titled "Deep Coring of the Greens in April" has been previously sent to you detailing the upcoming works on the 18th Fairway prior to commencing the irrigation project.

Our course staff have been diligently preparing a temporary green on the 16th fairway, positioned opposite the lady's tee. The tee for this temporary green will be the existing men's 16th tee. Both the men's and ladies will tee off from the temporary tee Monday to Friday during the works.

Throughout the installation of the new fairway irrigation system this winter, we will utilize the temporary green. From Monday to Friday while the irrigation upgrade is underway on a fairway, this new temporary hole will be in play.

During this period, we will have two 16th holes:

1. The new temporary par three hole. To be called hole 16A. Both men and ladies will tee off from the existing men's 16th tee for this hole.

2. The second temporary 16th hole will be designated as hole 16B. Both the Men and Women will be utilizing the Ladies 16th tee for this hole. The hole which will remain a par 5 for the Men. The ladies will play the 16B hole under current conditions that is as a par 5.

3. Golf Australia (GA) and MICLUB will update the course rating weekly, contingent on which hole is temporarily closed for play. Handicaps will be adjusted according to the GA course rating.

4. Distance from temporary 16A tee will be, Red 93, Blue 103, Black 113.

On Saturday and Sundays, the 16th hole will revert to its original condition and normal play. All other holes will be in play as normal.

Course Director
